Through a discreet vocabulary in between visibility and invisibility, Léa Belooussovitch’s works deals with the documentary image and Information, investigating straight its original source, its ethics, its veracity and its reception mode. While gathering databases, texts, images from various media sources, the artist creates visual microscopes about some of the facets from society, through drawing and photography langages. Far from reducing towards simple représentations, works appears as visual apparatus which divert the initial reception mode from the used datas.
One of the artist favourite material is a white manufactured felt textile which she cuts out into specific sizes. The orignal image collected from current events bound to a highly dramatic nature, is transferred on the felt while drawing free hand, with coloured pencils. The appearing shape occurs blurred, barely recognizable. The felt reminds to the band-aid which aims to heal a wound ; or allude to the shroud envelop. Here the material witnesses its protective function : it keeps from the external cold, from sound ; it « protects » the victim whose, through the unveiling of the photographic image and voyeurism it arouse, owns something vulnerable. The tragic event doesn’t stand on the foreground but at the background, even in a more intimate level, just behind the work surface.
” Art is a way to communicate in between human beings about the world and what is happening. To be on a string in between reality, information, what is visible on one side, and poetry, perceptible and invisibility on the other side.”
