Boredom comes from frustration or familiarity. Routine is repetitive and comfort can be stifling. The Home provides a good context for my work; familiarity and nostalgia stagnating into boredom and frustration. Reliable structure for soft mushy bodies.
The components of a sculpture have relationships. They support or suppress, influencing one another like counters in a board game. Sagginess is pathetic and endearing and sweet and comical. It means weakness, lethargy, failure, sadness, reliance. I’m exploiting the associations which that quality already has and manipulating them into a coherent narrative.
Edges are softened and objects are cartoonified. The excel grid loses its rigidity to become analogue and droopy. Wallpaper climbs off the walls and asks to be Subject over Surface. The materials misbehave and refuse to perform their intended function. This gives them autonomy and personality.
Maybe the work is about frustration but the aesthetic result and the making process is Satisfaction and that’s what I want it to be.
