I’ve been making collages since I can remember! As a child I was always sticking bits of paper and coloured tissue together. Then in school I was really into painting, but I would always find a way of incorporating other materials into the piece. I would use everything and anything, bits of wood, poly filler, old photographs and broken ornaments.
I studied at Leeds College of Art for a year and got really into analogue glitch art. Using the photocopiers and scanners to create distorted copies of my face, body parts and all sorts of other objects, which I would then collage together into a much larger very abstract piece. Using acetate to bring colour to the work. It was only when I went to study Graphic Communication at Bath School of Art, that I realised I wanted to make work that was more commercial, which is when I started using photoshop to create digital art.
I now work at House of Holland fashion house in London, creating digital content for the website and social media. I freelance as much as I can in my spare time and create collages daily as a hobby!
The collage choice
My favourite thing about collage is that it allows me to create a world of my own. I like to make work with humour, I definitely don’t take myself too seriously. Collage lets you make subtle comments or jokes, simply by placing two objects together, and who doesn’t love a bit of fun?! It gets us through the day!
Flickr commons and stock images form the basis of my work. I used to create all the content in my work myself, but I just don’t have the time anymore, unless the work is for a commission, then I always create everything from scratch! But if it’s just personal, I take the short cut and download/ buy the imagery. This also means I have more opportunities, to use content that I wouldn’t have been able to photograph myself! I pages and pages of ideas and thoughts for pieces I want to make, I just wish I had more time to do them all!
New projects coming
I have two commissions coming up that i’m super excited about! For the first i’m creating two GIF’s for a well known brand of Alcoholic Spirits and another i’m creating a GIF for a global event next month! But sadly I can’t say any more about either at this stage!
Introvert, inquisitive, persistent and haphazard.
“EVERYTHING IS ART! I love being with someone who says ‘I could have made that’ or ‘I don’t like it/ don’t understand it’. For me, art is anything that provokes a reaction positive or negative. The point is, that they didn’t make that piece; the artist did. That artist put it in a gallery or put it online for you to judge, and you did exactly what they hoped for! Art makes you think about something else, even if it’s just for a second, and that’s what I love about it. “
