Richard Caldicott

Richard Caldicott INTERVIEW

 About

Since the artist’s acclaimed series featuring Tupperware in the 1990s, Richard Caldicott has continually challenged photographic codes of representation in favor of new aesthetic and symbolic intentions.  Employing traditional analog photography methods, Caldicott imbues his minimalist set of components with rich, vibrant color.  The result is stunningly beautiful abstract work that is both self-contained and part of a larger dialogue, with nods to iconic minimalism, Color Field paintings, and pop reappropriation.

Richard Caldicott graduated from the The Royal College of Art in 1987 and currently lives in London.

.

Let introduce yourself, how would you describe yourself ?

An artist that works across various media, I have an interdisciplinary approach.

.

I read that you challenged codes in photography, in which way do you think about it ?

I always thought that I am not exclusively a photographer but an artist that uses different media, so maybe my approach to photography is a little different.

.

Your photo series using Tupperwares is famous and often compared to Color Field abstract painting, did you have in mind the work Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman or any of them ?

There are always a lot of references to previous work going on in the back of my mind but really with the Tupperware series one piece led to the next, it was a succession and continuation of images.

.

You use analog method, why this choice and why not digital method, what importance does it have in your process ?

I do actually use both. Ok, the photogram and paper negatives are analogue. The colour photographs start as analogue then the transparency is scanned and re-touched if necessary before digital printing.

.

How the practice of photogram came to you ?

Again this was a way of combining several methods of working, drawing, cutting/collage, and photography. Each piece is unique, made by me without the use of a lab or assistants.

.

.

What about the notion of repetition, what  does that represent through your work ?

I’m not sure it’s exact repetition, I just like to work in series to extend an idea as far as possible.

.

Using modernist approach of point, line, color, you managed to create something new, are you aware of this ?

I try not to think too much about that, I just like to make work.

.

When you work with « unusual objects », do you invite the viewer gaze to reconsider this object with a new approach ?

I think so, in particular humble objects and things which are overlooked. I like the transformation of an object, Duchamp’s urinal or a Gober sink, for example.

.

.

In which way the link to music, maybe minimal music influence your work ?

Yes there’s always music on in the background while I work. I am interested in the whole story of Cage, Feldman and the collaboration with other artists, it’s a great inspiration.

.

Doing collage always reminds me to the dadaist period, do you create yours in same way of thinking ?

I am aware of that but I would say I am thinking more about architectural themes, structures, models and shifts of scale etc.

.

What do you think about contemporary abstract art ?

I think it’s at an interesting moment and in particular abstract photography.

.
